Operators warns of workplace Covid calls

A north-west coach operator has warned fellow operators to expect unsolicited calls from HSE, which is conducting Covid-19 business spot checks.

“I was contacted by a lady on the phone claiming to be from the HSE, advising she was going to undertake a telephone Covid-19 secure workplace check,” says Richard Bamber, of Anthony’s Travel of Runcorn. “I doubted the legitimacy of the call and asked her to send me an email. She couldn’t do that but referred me to a web link and couldn’t supply a contact number.”

Richard says he refused to offer the details she wanted over the phone, but then contacted HSE direct: “HSE confirmed that, for Covid-19, they are working in partnership with another organisation to collate business information. I explained that more widespread awareness of this process is needed as its not businesses being difficult but they have a right to be vigilant before sharing any information.”

Richard says there is an HSE Covid-19 hotline, 0300 790 6896, which hash a lengthy answerphone message explaining that workplace Covid-19 workplace spot checks are being carried out by telephone or visits if required.

“I have now left my number for a call back. However, the initial contact was very unusual and would trigger alarm bells. I understand that safety is the priority but HSE Need to make businesses aware of this telephone process and provide a verification method not just reel off a web link.”
