Douglas Bailey MBE. 1941 – 2020

UK Bus Driver of the Year Association (BDoY) stalwart, Douglas Bailey MBE, has passed away, aged 79.

One of BDoY’s longest-serving council members and a life-long busman, Douglas passed away peacefully at Marley Court Nursing Home Chorley on 15 May 2020, aged 79, his wife Helen at his side. Just a few weeks earlier, his former employer Stagecoach Lancashire and Merseyside named Gold-liveried ADL Enviro400-bodied Scania N230UD 15741 in his honour.

His exceptional 57 years in the industry includes an unblemished driving record, service as a trade union representative, and membership of the Bus Driver of the Year council. He received his MBE for services to public transport in the 2005 New Year’s honours.

Paying tribute, Joe Mackie OBE, BDoY chairman, said: “Douglas was a very much respected member of the BDoY family, and we all benefited from his knowledge and experience. He will be remembered as a true gentleman and friend.”

A private family funeral service took place at Charnock Richard Crematorium on Friday 29 May 2020. A memorial service is to be held at a later date. Donations to Parkinson’s UK, Chorley and South Ribble Branch or Marley Court Nursing Home.
