‘Whiplash’ claim dismissed

A woman’s exaggerated claim for a whiplash injury sustained onboard a Go North East bus has been thrown out of court. Rachel Oliver of Consett, Co Durham, claimed she had been ‘severely injured’ during a bus journey when she alleged that the driver had driven too fast over a speed bump. When she took her claim to Durham County Court in August, the court dismissed her case and ordered her to pay costs of £8,250. CCTV footage and contradictory medical reports discredited the claim.

Finance Director at Go North East, Colin McPherson, said, ‘False and spurious claims against bus companies add thousands of pounds to the cost of bus travel every year. We are determined to ensure that such claims become a thing of the past. All our vehicles are fitted with CCTV cameras that record events both inside and outside the bus and such evidence will be presented to the courts.’
