Stagecoach cites cost rises behind fare hike
Operating cost rises of up to 40% were mentioned as the reason behind Stagecoach East Midlands’ changes to its bus fares. The operator is planning to implement the changes to its ticket prices from 10 April 2023.
The operator says that since 2019-20, Stagecoach has seen a 29% increase in maintenance costs, with the price of tyres increasing by 18%. Over the same period, utility costs have risen by more than 40%, including an increase of 16% in the last year alone. Stagecoach has also agreed significant pay increases for its employees across the country, reflecting the cost-of-living challenges being faced by consumers.
Dave Skepper, Interim Managing Director for Stagecoach East Midlands, said: “Stagecoach has consistently delivered some of the lowest ticket prices in the country and we are committed to continuing to keep fares as low as possible for our passengers.”
