Portsmouth bus improvements upcoming

Work on schemes designed to improve bus journeys in Portsmouth start this week. As part of a wider package of enhancements that include better provision for walkers and cyclists, the work is planned to be finished in May 2024.

The following improvements will be introduced to City Centre South as part of the South East Hampshire Rapid Transit (SEHRT) project:

  • The road layout will be widened on Isambard Brunel Road to allow a two-way traffic flow, which will help to reduce congestion.
  • A new controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed on Isambard Brunel Road near Guildhall Square which will help to make this area safer for pedestrians to cross.
  • The mini roundabout will be replaced with a crossroad traffic light junction. This will include controlled pedestrian crossings and will help to make this area safer for people to cross on foot.

To reduce congestion and prioritise safety during the works, general traffic flow will be restricted through Station Square junction and Isambard Brunel Road. This means that during construction the area will not be open to vehicles other than buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, vehicles accessing the train station and cyclists.

Portsmouth City Council is suggesting visitors use the city’s park and ride.
