New motor clocks up 2.5m miles in service
A new UK-engineered electric motor has achieved 2.5million miles in commercial transport operations. The achievement was recorded across fleets of urban buses and light rail trains operated by a major transportation authority in Asia.
The fleet of HDRM300 motors, designed and engineered in the UK by Advanced Electric Machines, were initially deployed in 2022. Since the motors have been deployed, the manufacturer says they have demonstrated exceptional reliability and performance in highly demanding applications.
CEO of AEM, James Widmer, said: “This is a significant achievement that proves the durability of our AEM HDRM technology in the most arduous applications in the commercial vehicle market. It builds on the historical reliability advantage of reluctance motors and demonstrates to potential customers that our innovative technology delivers exceptional longevity in real-world conditions.”
The company says the HDRM300’s success can be attributed to AEM’s proprietary magnet-free design, which is designed to ensure robust performance particularly under heavy loads. Unlike permanent magnet machines, AEM motors are not sensitive to high operating temperatures.
The fleets utilising the HDRM300 motors have delivered consistent performance across regularly scheduled routes since deployment, according to AEM. The mileage achievements were validated through systematic tracking of operational data from the transportation operators.
