New coach stop for Abingdon is out of town

Vale of White Horse District Council has created a new drop-off/pick-up coach stop for tourists visiting Abingdon.

The new facility is hoped to help visitors and alleviate traffic congestion in the town. The new stop is at Hales Meadow car park next to the River Thames and will allow coaches to drop off and pick up visitors a short walk from the town centre. Coaches will be able to stop for a maximum of 20 minutes, allowing passengers to leave and get onboard the vehicles safely. It should also mean fewer coaches have to travel into the town centre.

The vehicles will be expected to turn off their engines and not leave them idling while they wait for their passengers to embark and disembark to help improve air quality as part of the council’s new anti-idling campaign.

Cllr Jenny Hannaby, Vale of White Horse District Council cabinet member for environmental and technical services, said: “This is good news, tourists will be welcomed to Abingdon by having easier coach parking and so more visitors will be able to access our wonderful historic town and river activities. Car parks situated outside town can help reduce traffic through town centres and improve air quality.”

And the coach parking is where?

It is a shame councils think it a good idea to drop off outside the town centre and walk in.
Most coach trip passengers are older and less able, so this is definitely not convenient for them and causes problems for the driver.
