Midway celebrates 60 years with a new Tourismo
Family run Midway Motors is now in its 60th year of business and in celebration has added a Mercedes-Benz Tourismo M to its fleet. Located in Crymych, Wales, amongst the Preseli Hills, the operator provides a range of day excursions, continental tours and public services on board luxury vehicles. It is now operated by the third generation of the Rees family.
Midway Motors’ new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo M features a celebratory livery, displaying a 60 years’ of operation emblem along with a range of historic landmarks associated with the operator’s region. Built to Touring Plus specification, the 13m tri-axle seats 53 in Luxline leather-fabric upholstery. An extensive range of premium features on board include wifi, boon kitchen, dual electric folding 19inch LCD monitors and a Bosch audio-visual system. Power is delivered by the Mercedes-Benz OM 470, 290kW Euro 6 engine paired with a six-speed ZF EcoLife automatic transmission. The coach was delivered to Midway Motors by Mercedes-Benz Coach Sales at EvoBus (UK).
Commenting on the new vehicle, Midway Motors Director, Iwan Rees, said, “We have a few Mercedes tri-axles, so we’re used to them. It’s been working well for us, it’s good on fuel use and the passengers like it.”
The company started as a garage, selling cars and carrying out MOTs, which is a side of the business it still maintains. It grew from there, making its first move in to the coach market with Bristols, some of which it still owns. It has recently added more school contracts to its portfolio. Iwan reports the company’s coach tours are busy too.
So, what is the secret to running an operation for 60 years? Iwan said: “It’s about keeping things reasonable. Maintenance-wise, it’s about keeping everything as best as we can and not getting in trouble on that side of things. I like to see everything up to scratch. One of the main things is running the operation as smoothly as possible. We’ve also kept it from getting too big. We get a lot of work through being a family business, people like to be able to talk to you.”
