Metroline orders additional Volvo BZL Electrics

Metroline, part of global transport operator ComfortDelGro, is set to deploy a further 28 Volvo BZL Electric single-deckers in London.

Intended for use on two routes in the capital, the buses are expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2024.

This marks Metroline’s second electric order with Volvo Buses, having signed an initial agreement for 48 Volvo BZL Electric single decks last November, with the first due to arrive on fleet this summer.

“We are excited to be extending the benefits of riding on some of the cleanest, quietest, and most sustainable buses in the capital, to more of our customers” – ComfortDelGro (UK) Group Engineering Director, Adrian Jones

ComfortDelGro (UK) Group Engineering Director, Adrian Jones, said: “We continue to make significant investments to introduce more electric buses into our operation, and this latest order demonstrates the confidence we have in Volvo Buses and the aftersales support it provides.

“Metroline has been pioneering the roll-out of fully electric routes in London for some time, and with an excellent track record. We are excited to be extending the benefits of riding on some of the cleanest, quietest, and most sustainable buses in the capital, to more of our customers.”

The new arrivals will be supported locally by mobile Field Service Technicians working out of the Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London North and London Heathrow dealerpoints, situated in Enfield and Hayes respectively.

“Metroline is a terrific customer to work with; the team know precisely what they want from a manufacturer” – Richard Mann, Regional Sales Director – South, at Volvo Bus UK & Ireland

Richard Mann, Regional Sales Director – South, at Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, said: “With the new Volvo BZL Electric we have a fantastic single and double-deck product which is quickly finding favour with major fleets, and is going to look fantastic operating in London’s iconic red livery.

“Metroline is a terrific customer to work with; the team know precisely what they want from a manufacturer, and we have every confidence in our new BZL Electric to impress in service.”

Each of the new 10.8m buses will be bodied by MCV to TfL specifications, with twin double-doors and 29 seats. They will operate on two routes, including the 316 Metroline route from Cricklewood to White City, and the 228 from Central Middlesex Hospital and Maida Hill, which Metroline is taking responsibility for from 20 January 2024.

The new fleet will be powered by 200 kW low-loss electric motors, delivering impressive torque and driveability for safe operation. Their two-stage automated gearboxes are designed to help increase wheel torque at low-speed and even out current peaks, which in turn reduces energy usage and driveline wear.
