Lord Peter Hendy joins DfT

Lord Peter Hendy of Richmond Hill CBE has been appointed Minister of State at the DfT.

Currently the Chairman of Network Rail, Lord Hendy’s transport career started in 1975 at London Transport. He was made MD of CentreWest London buses in 1989, leading the operation through a buyout by First in 1994.

After a period in managerial roles at First Bus, Peter became MD of Surface Transport at TfL in 2001. During his period in office, bus ridership in the capital grew. He became commissioner of TfL in 2008. in 2015 he became Chair of Network Rail.

Lord Peter was given a CBE in 2006 for his work in public transport and was knighted in 2013 for his work on transport during the 2012 London Olympics. He was given a life peerage as part of the 2022 Special Honours.
