Buses burn at Potters Bar fire

Six buses have caught fire at Potters Bar Bus Garage, operated by ComfortDelGro-owned Metroline.

Vehicles damaged by fire at the scene include two electric hybrid buses and four diesel buses.

Firefighters were called to reports of a significant fire at the Garage at around 2.30pm on Sunday (22 May 2022).

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service reported: “The first fire engine was on the scene within four minutes, where four buses were well alight. Neighbouring properties were quickly evacuated and the surrounding buildings and other buses were on fire – two electric hybrid and four diesel powered. Thanks to the efforts of the firefighters involved, the fire was contained to six buses and did not spread to cause further damage to buildings and vehicles.”

The incident resulted in the closure of Potters Bar High Street, causing significant disruption locally, as well as impacting the locale’s public transport.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause and origin of the fire is currently under investigation and is yet to be established.

Videos have been posted online allegedly showing the buses ablaze.

A Metroline spokesperson said: “We can confirm that all personnel were successfully evacuated and that there were no injuries. We will work closely with the emergency services to investigate the cause of the fire.”
