‘Great sadness’ as Lewis Coaches closes

Following the demise of two other Welsh operators, GHA Coaches and Silcox Coaches, in the past two months, another has joined the list. Lewis Coaches of Llanrhystud, Ceredigion, ceased operation on 12 August 2016. A statement on the company’s website said, ‘It is with great sadness that due to business issues beyond our control, Lewis Coaches will be closing its doors on 12/8/2016. We would like to thank all our customers for their loyal custom over the years, and we hope this does not cause any problems for anyone.’

Director of CPT Cymru, John Pockett, said Lewis Coaches employed 30 vehicles and 40 staff, many of whom were from the operator’s local area. Funding cuts, he claims, have been putting pressure on operators across Wales. He said, ‘I’m sad for the employees at Lewis Coaches and for the travelling public affected, as well as those in other parts of Wales who have lost out in the past two months.’

Ceredigion Council provided the following statement: ‘In response to unfortunate developments affecting a local bus company, officers from Ceredigion County Council are working on arrangements to maintain the services and travel opportunities that the company provided on its behalf. Various measures are being implemented to share information and officers from the Authority are in ongoing liaison with Traveline Cymru with a view of ensuring that up to date information is available to the public. The longer term implications and response to the situation will be considered in due course and information shared when appropriate.’
