Go NE celebrates long serving employees

Go North East has celebrated its long serving employees at an awards event at the Hilton hotel in Gateshead. The Go-Ahead owned operator gave awards for long service to 84 of its employees. Coachbuilder, Philip Mercer from Birtley, picked up his 50 year long service award. Eight employees, John Flowdy, John Harland, John Marriner, George Marshall, Tony Mayes, Ian McPherson, Brian Milburn and Derek Wilson, were recognised for their 45 years’ service, racking up an incredible 410 years’ collective service. They were joined by colleagues celebrating 25, 30, 35 and 40 years’ service. All were given gifts ranging from £300 to £800.

Philip Mercer said, ‘When I started some buses didn’t even have doors! I’ve worked on all sorts – from early Leylands, to Routemasters to Nationals. Of course, everything has become computerised and electric these days. A lot of the components have changed, panels used to be aluminium but now they’re fibreglass and plastic. I’ve enjoyed my job. I’ve met a lot of different people. I’ve enjoyed working with and training all the lads coming through.’
