Gender+ Bus study aims for gender inclusive services

A study by Aberystwyth University is looking at the experience of women using and accessing buses. It is investigating safety in particular, with the aim of making bus services more inclusive for women and girls.

Entitled ‘Gender+ bus: tackling sexual harassment and violence against women for a gender inclusive bus service in Wales and the UK’, it sees Transport for Wales and the University seek views on women’s experience in using buses and other public transport, including planning journeys, waiting and getting to and from buses.

It is looking at what makes respondents feel vulnerable, intimidated or relaxed, safe, and secure. Incidents of harassment or violence experienced by respondents and/or other women in public spaces is being analysed, as are interactions encountered with other people, particularly when using buses.

Respondents will also be asked about changes, interventions, policies or ideas they think could be used to improve women’s experience of using buses.
