French tachograph infringements investigated

CPT reports that some of its members have been fined in France due to a new interpretation of drivers’ hours rules in the country. According to the CPT, authorities there believe the new regulation that brings in the smart tachograph abolishes the possibility of a second driver taking a break on a moving coach while his colleague is driving. It is the French authority’s view that the vehicle must be stationary, with its engine turned off, while either or both of the drivers are resting. CPT believes this interpretation is wrong. It says the International Road Transport Union (IRU) is already in touch with the European Commission, which is working towards an infringement case against France.

If you or any employees have been fined for this, CPT requests you contact Andy Warrender ([email protected]) and tell him the number of vehicles/drivers stopped and fined, where they were stopped, the levels of fines imposed and any other relevant information. The trade body will then pass the information to the European Commission as part of the case for action.
