First’s battery storage partnership hits milestone

A partnership between FirstGroup and Palmer Energy Technology has met a new milestone.

It sees Palmer Energy Technology announce contract execution for the supply of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to FirstGroup Energy, the dedicated energy investment arm of FirstGroup. The agreement was concluded in December 2024.

Under the terms of the partnership, Palmer Energy will design, manufacture, and deliver a bespoke BESS that meets decarbonisation ambition of FirstGroup Plc in the bus sector, supporting their commitment to sustainability and the energy transition within the UK’s transport infrastructure. The system, engineered for flexibility and durability, is intended to help FirstGroup Plc increase value from its energy infrastructure assets and optimise the total cost of ownership of its electric bus fleet.

The Palmer BESS incorporates the Brill Power Battery Management System, developed by the Oxford University spin out.  Brill Power offer systems that actively balance the battery cells for extending life and provide analytical data for continuous maintenance.  Use of the Brill Power software helps Palmer secure data confidentiality.
