Defibrillators as factory fit for VDLs

Royal Philips and VDL Bus & Coach have signed a collaboration agreement to equip VDL buses and coaches with AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) as optional factory equipment. With this initiative, the PCV manufacturer intends to make bus and coach transport even safer for its customers’ passengers. The equipment includes a ‘connected’ AED kit onboard, which gives users live support and coaching from first responders at a central location during resuscitation and also makes remote maintenance and service possible. In addition, it is possible to see in real-time whether an AED has been activated and determine its exact location via GPS. The unit’s communications technology automatically reports whether the system is working properly and ready for use. The kit can also measure the ambient temperature and relative humidity. An all-in subscription system gives the customer the advantage of having no additional costs for maintenance and no investment in equipment.

Product Manager VDL Bus & Coach, Pieter Gerdingh, said, ‘VDL strives to guarantee the highest level of comfort and safety for the millions of passengers our customers bring to their destinations worldwide. The cooperation with Philips provides us the opportunity to take an extra step in that direction. Of course anyone can suffer a heart attack, but people at higher age are at greater risk. In a society with a growing group of elderly who actively get out and about on buses and coaches, we see the onboard AED on our buses and coaches as a great added value for safe transport.’
