Deaths as bus and car collide in south Wales

Three men, two aged 18 and one aged 19, were declared dead at the scene of a crash involving a bus and a car in south Wales.

At around 7pm last night (Monday 11 December 2023) emergency services were called to the scene of a serious road traffic collision involving a bus and an Audi A1 on Ely Valley Road, Coedely, in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

As well as the three fatalities, two further men, aged 18 and 19, were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff with life threatening injuries.

Two other people were also treated for minor injuries.

The road has remained closed while investigations into the collision continue.

Superintendent Esyr Jones of South Wales Police said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident. Trained family liaison officers are supporting the families at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.”

The bus involved in the collision was operated by Stagecoach South Wales.

Martin Gibbon, Managing Director for Stagecoach South Wales, said: “We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in an incident last night in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Our first priority and heartfelt thoughts go out to the people affected by this incident, as well as their family and loved ones and we are supporting our driver at this time. We are fully cooperating with the police and we will provide every support we can to assist the investigation into this incident.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner in which either vehicle was being driven before the collision is asked to contact South Wales Police.
