CAVForth switches off autonomous as upgrades explored

Autonomous driving capabilities on Stagecoach East Scotland’s CAVForth bus service have been switched off as the operator explores some potential upgrades.

Now currently driven by a human, the AB1 bus route is between Edinburgh Park and the Ferrytoll Park and Ride site in Fife, crossing the Forth Road Bridge. A human driver is always onboard, regardless of whether the bus is in autonomous mode or not. The autonomous service was launched in May 2023.

“We are currently in the process of doing some exploratory upgrades on our autonomous system” – Stagecoach spokesperson

A spokesperson from Stagecoach told B&CB: “We are currently in the process of doing some exploratory upgrades on our autonomous system. During this period, our vehicles will be operated manually. We anticipate this transition to last for a few days. Unlike other trials, we are dedicated to maintaining a timetabled bus service and transport connection for our passengers. Therefore, our AB1 service will continue as scheduled, with our autonomous buses being temporarily driven by our experienced human staff.”
