Bomb scare closes Buchanan Bus Station

A suspicious item left at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow that led to the temporary closure of the facility and nearby area was discovered to be innocent in nature.

Superintendent Derrick Johnston said: “The initial report was treated as a credible threat and, as a precautionary measure and in accordance with procedures, the surrounding area was closed to the public and a cordon put in place.”

Emergency crews were reported to have arrived at the scene and the site was evacuated.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) staff at the station are all trained to deal with evacuation procedures, with safety of its customers the first priority. Staff at the bus station followed all the usual protocols as per their training while police established a 200m cordon around the bus station. The public were advised to stay away from the area.

The Bus Station was closed from approximately 1.30pm to 10.30pm.

The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion after an assessment was made of the impact to nearby gas mains and local train lines. The item was then examined and confirmed to be innocent in nature, posing no risk to the public.

A spokesperson from SPT said: “The attitude of bus station staff involved in the incident was exemplary and SPT is very grateful for the efforts of all those involved.”
