Ashcroft spirits raised after fire

Following a devastating fire at Ashcroft Travel at the end of June, the Widnes-based operator’s spirits have been warmed with a card and gift from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary School in Widnes.

A statement on the operator’s Twitter feed said: “A huge thank you to everybody at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Primary School for your beautiful card and thoughtful gift after our recent fire. You truly are amazing.”

A significant proportion of the operator’s fleet was wrecked in the fire, according to reports, leaving it with 30 vehicles undamaged. Its paperwork was also destroyed.

The fire was declared a major incident by fire and rescue services and saw 16 fire engines attend the inferno at its peak at the Golden Triangle Industrial Estate in Widnes. On arrival crews found a warehouse measuring 30m by 50m well alight. Four industrial units measuring approximately 100m by 30m were affected by the fire, which caused a large amount of smoke. The incident saw nearby residences temporarily evacuated.

One casualty was given first aid by firefighters before being handed over to the care of paramedics. He had not been burnt by the fire.

By midday on 2 July, six days after the fire was started, a demolition team was at the site and fire crews had been stood down, the fire incident closed. Part of the site was set to be demolished
