A19 improvements to start

Work to implement improvements on one of York’s busiest road interchanges, the A19 south of York, is due to start on 11 May. The main works are anticipated to take 16 weeks to complete. These will include the construction of a new inbound bus lane between the two roundabouts which will link into the existing bus lane on the A19 north of the junction. Also an extra traffic lane will be added on the approach to, and through, the Designer Outlet (southern) roundabout. These works are intended to increase the capacity of this junction and save users time on their journeys through this major interchange. Some road closures are likely to be put in place during the construction.

The modifications are expected to tackle congestion and improve public transport reliability and journey times on to over 20,000 vehicles that use the road daily. The Pinch Point scheme is supported with approximately £2m DfT funding, which City of York Council successfully bid for and secured from a share of a £170m Government Pinch Point Fund in 2013. The £2m funding contributes towards the cost of the £4.7m overall project.
