£3m for green buses

Over £3m in funding has been announced for seven towns and cities to fit green technology to existing buses. This is to help improve air quality and create a better environment for residents and visitors. The funding is the latest tranche of support from the Clean Vehicle Technology Fund, which has retrofitted more than 1,650 vehicles with green technology.

The money will go towards providing exhaust gas treatment equipment for Centro (21 buses, £404,250), Blackpool (30 buses, £500,000), West Yorkshire (23 buses, £221,550) and Suffolk (26 buses, £494,000). Durham is to receive £440, 496 for the fitment of Flywheel hybrid technology on 28 buses, whilst Plymouth is to get £484,921 for similar technology on 14 buses. York is set to receive £475,760 for full electric drive systems on five buses.

Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, said, ‘Fitting green technology to bus fleets will make town centres healthier and more pleasant places for everyone. This government has now funded the retrofitting of more than 1,650 vehicles in total, helping to cut emissions and supporting jobs and growth in our environmental technology industries.’

Baroness Kramer said, ‘The £3m funding announced today will help improve town centre air across England, benefitting residents and businesses. These grants continue this government’s commitment to lowering emissions from public transport and support the growth of green transport in the UK.’
