Video: MP makes case for coaches at Commons

Member of Parliament for Moray, Douglas Ross MP, has made the case at the House of Commons for a bespoke deal to aid the coach industry. The move shows the MP has listened to the calls of Maynes of Buckie, one of his local operators, for government aid.

At the House of Commons, Douglas Ross said: “Our coach industry is going to be vital as the country opens up and we begin our recovery from COVID-19. Local Morray firm, Maynes of Buckie and owner Kevin Mayne have been leading calls for a bespoke deal to support the coach industry. Is this something the Treasury will look at and consider?”

In response, Financial secretary to the Treasury (and former-Under-Secretary of State for Transport), Jesse Norman, said: “While I understand the desire for bespoke deals across every sector is extremely great, our view has been that what is required is to lift all boats for a general support for the economy and that is the approach we’ve taken and that is why the interventions we have made so far include almost £300bn of guarantees, roughly 15% of UK GDP.”

In a social media response, Douglas Ross said: “Not the response I had hoped for but I’ll continue to put pressure on the UK and Scottish Governments to support our coach industry. They are a vital part of our economy and crucial as we reopen after Covid-19.”
