trentbarton’s AVID hybrid roll out

trentbarton is to retrofit AVID eFan Micro Hybrid Systems to its existing bus fleet. Initially the program will concentrate on the company’s Optare Versas on the my15 route between Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Sawley, followed by Volvo B7RLEs on the Mickleover in Derby. A further roll out will see other models being converted. The move follows a trial of the technology.

The AVID eFan Micro Hybrid System replaces the belt or hydraulically driven cooling pack on the bus with an integrated system. AVID’s unit uses efficient fans, high performance heat exchangers and an advanced electronic control system. This improves fuel efficiency by reducing the power consumed by the cooling system and ensuring optimum engine temperatures are maintained. The system also improves reliability as it greatly simplifies cleaning of the cooling pack as the fans can be reversed to suck debris out of the system at the touch of a button. The AVID system also removes the fire risk of the hydraulic system and can be connected into a fire suppression solution. Ipswich Buses also has the system on trial.

MD of trentbarton, Jeff Counsell, said, ‘We have tried many products with fantastic claims in the past, but the AVID eFan Micro Hybrid System is one of the first times we have seen such a clear and tangible improvement in fuel consumption. The cost savings and environmental benefits make this a real no brainer for us. Whilst we are also investing heavily in new vehicles, the beauty of the AVID system is that it allows us to improve our existing fleet.’
