Tower Transit acquires Whippet Coaches

Tower Transit, the UK based operation of Australia’s Transit Systems acquired Swavesey, Cambridgeshire based Whippet Coaches Ltd on 14th November for an undisclosed sum. Under the ‘goWhippet’ brand, the company operates a portfolio of services including participation in the Cambridgeshire Busway. Around 100 staff and 50 vehicles were included in the business transfer.

Whippet Coaches commenced operations in 1919 in Graveley before moving to Hilton, Fenstanton and then Swavesey whilst remaining a family business for three generations. Former Director Peter Lee, who will remain with the operation during the transfer period told Bus and Coach Buyer that the sale for family reasons was in the best interests of the business which was in good shape. Peter confirmed that Whippet Coaches and Transit Systems have known each other for around ten years and, with a similar business ethos, now was the opportunity for Whippet Coaches to be given a new opportunity to progress.

Peter added, ‘we would like to thank the staff and all the people and companies we have worked with over the years and trust that this support will carry on with the new owners.’

  1. John Wakefield says:

Hopefully this will give some much needed competition to Stagecoach who
have had the monopoly in Cambridge for too long . Whippet were never much of
a threat to Stagecoach & this buy out maybe give them a bit more
    clout
