Tony’s run for lung disease

Compak Ramp’s Global Sales and Marketing Director, Tony Rodwell, will be taking part in a 5k run at Leybourne Lakes in Kent on 9th May, 2015 to help to raise funds and raise awareness for Lymphangioleomyomastosis (LAM), a rare lung disease that occurs almost exclusively in women. In 2014, Tony’s step daughter, Louise Robey, a mother with two small children, was diagnosed with the disease.

LAM predominantly affects the lungs, where it causes excessive growth of smooth muscle cells that progressively destroy lung tissue and erode lung function. Although research is ongoing, currently there is no cure for LAM and effective treatment is limited. For some women with LAM, lung transplantation is their only means of survival. Due to the condition, even such simple tasks as taking a vacuum cleaner upstairs is an effort for which she subsequently needs to rest. She also requires significantly more sleep than a healthy person which detracts from normal family life. Also, perhaps more significantly for an attractive young girl, she needs to wear an oxygen pack to avoid undue strain on her heart.

Tony said, ‘I accept and understand LAM is not a high profile condition and therefore may not attract a lot of interest. However, for those that suffer, without hope of any cure, it’s devastating! Consequently, it’s vital funding is raised for research; not only to help those with LAM but their families who have to deal with knowing that even a common cold can have dramatic effect on the condition of their loved-ones.’

This will be the second 5k run that Tony has participated in after suffering a cardiac arrest after an adverse reaction to anaesthetic in 2013. Compak Ramps will be helping to sponsor the event and Tony has already received support from across the industry.
