Public inquiry for Leeds trolleybuses

Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, has decided there will be a Public Inquiry into the New Generation Transport (NGT) trolleybus project in Leeds. The decision was reached after he considered the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application for the scheme. The NGT team will now produce a Statement of Case setting out the rationale for implementing the trolleybuses together with the business case. This will be published on 30 January. Between now and the Inquiry (expected to take place in the spring), the team will be considering the issues raised in the responses to see which can be resolved and which will be looked at as evidence by the Inquiry Inspector. The Scheme’s designs have already been refined to address concerns expressed through the consultation process.

Metro Chairman, Cllr James Lewis, said, ‘As we stated when we launched the TWAO application process in September and have made clear through the project’s development, a public inquiry is inevitable with any transport scheme of this size. It will be a good opportunity for Metro and Leeds City Council to present the significant transport, and economic benefits that will result from what will be one of the UK’s largest transport schemes outside London and a chance for those people that are opposed to the scheme to present to the Inspector any evidence that supports their claims.’
