New transport interchange for Altrincham

Bus travellers to Altrincham will be able to enjoy the benefits of a new £19m transport interchange in the town centre, thanks to an investment by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). The transport hub will offer a safer and more pleasant environment to passengers, with a modern concourse, new ticket office, improved CCTV and passenger information services and fully integrated transport links to the tram and rail networks. 53 Solar panels have also been fitted to the roof, which are expected to generate over 9500 kWh of electricity and save 5.5 tonnes of CO2 each year.

From its opening, all services will use the interchange in place of the temporary stops that were in place whilst the concourse was under construction.
Chair of the TfGM Committee, Cllr Andrew Fender, commented, ‘Customers can now experience the improved facilities for themselves and enjoy the benefits of a fully integrated, fully accessible and eco-friendly transport hub that is sympathetic to the heritage of the original facility.’

The site has been an important transport link since 1881, where it was originally the site of the Altrincham and Bowden Station. Leader of Trafford Council Councillor Sean Anstee, said, ‘The opening of the new Altrincham interchange is a great historical occasion and will be an important legacy for the people of Trafford. Trafford Council is very proud to be a key partner in this fantastic new development.’
