National Express drops Winchester stop

National Express coaches is no longer serving Winchester’s coach stop near the city’s iconic King Alfred statue.

“We cannot confirm a new stop at this time” – National Express

A statement from the operator said: “A recently revised risk assessment criteria has determined that the stop at the King Alfred Statue in Winchester is no longer suitable as a National Express stop because of local traffic and the vehicle manoeuvre required.

“We have been working closely with Winchester Council to identify an alternative location that meets our criteria but also ensures the overall journey time of the service is not impacted negatively. We cannot confirm a new stop at this time.

“We appreciate this is a disappointment for Winchester residents and apologise for the inconvenience.”

Winchester City Cllr Martin Tod, Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery, said: “Winchester City Council offered a range of options to National Express to enable them to continue to use the Broadway – including the removal of a bus stand and car parking – to cope with their newer, larger, coaches. Unfortunately, these weren’t suitable. Winchester is a compact, medieval city and this means our options are relatively limited due to the turning circle that these coaches require. We are now looking more widely at possible solutions with Hampshire County Council and National Express. The City Council remains absolutely committed to working with Hampshire County Council to find a workable solution that will allow National Express services to continue to stop at Winchester.”
