London road closures

Between Thursday 14 January and Sunday 17 January 2016, CPT has warned that a number of roads will be closed in London for the London Lumiere light show. Taking place around the West End and King’s Cross, it will mean full road closures will be in place from 16.30 to 23.30 each night. It affects Oxford Street (between Orchard Street and Tottenham Court Road), Oxford Circus, Regent’s Street (between Margaret Street and Piccadilly Circus), Piccadilly (between Piccadilly Circus and St James’s) and The Mall.

Additionally, contingency closures will be put in place in the surrounding area should they be required. This area is roughly bounded by: Park Lane, Grosvenor Place, Victoria Street, Embankment, Kingsway, Southampton Row, Woburn Place, Euston Road, Marylebone Road and Baker Street.

As a result of these closures traffic is expected to be busier than normal in the central area. For further information and a traffic impact map visit the TfL website (https://tfl.gov.uk/status-updates/major-works-and-events).

This event is expected to have a significant impact to traffic, particularly coaches serving the West End. CPT is working to try and make further facilities available for coach passengers during the event but as an interim, it warns members should be aware of the situation and it advises trying to plan around it wherever possible.

Should contingency closures be activated it has been agreed that tourist coaches will be facilitated through the contingency closure at the Piccadilly/Hyde Park Corner junction only. They can then proceed to Green Park station, where they can turn via Stratton Street and Berkeley Street before heading westbound on Piccadilly. They are permitted to set down and pick up passengers (no parking or waiting) on the double and single yellow lines to the west of the Bolton Street junction. Stratton Street and Berkeley Street can be very tight with car parking and therefore coach drivers should exercise caution if using these roads and it is advised they are not suitable for coaches of more than 12m in length.

An alternative route is to proceed east along Piccadilly, St James’s Street, Pall Mall to Trafalgar Square before leaving the area via Charing Cross Road, Strand or Whitehall.

Coaches using this route should only use the designate coach bays on Charing Cross Road, The Strand or Kingsway.

The coach bays on Park Lane (Northbound) will be suspended for the duration of the event each evening. The bays on Millbank, Victoria Embankment, Albert Embankment and Kingsway are suggested alternatives. CPT says it is urgently seeking additional parking on a temporary basis. It is working with stakeholders in the event to try and ensure the inconvenience to customers is kept to an absolute minimum.
