London fares world’s most expensive – Jowell

London Mayor hopeful, Tessa Jowell, has released some research suggesting London has the most expensive public transport fares compared with the other top global cities. Her research group compared fares in London with global management consultancy firm, AT Kearney’s list of the other top 20 cities in the world, including New York, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Chicago, Beijing, Singapore, Washington DC, Brussels, Seoul, Toronto, Madrid, Vienna, Moscow, Shanghai, Berlin and Buenos Aires. Sydney was left off the list as it will not have a metro system until 2024. It was found that fares in London are more than double the price of every other city in the AT Kearney top 20. As part of the Labour Party candidate’s campaign to enter the Mayoral office, she has vowed to freeze fares across the capital’s transport network.

Tessa said, ‘London now has the most expensive transport in the world. As Inrix, transport analysts have shown, London is now the most congested city in Europe, that is bad for London’s economy and bad for health. More affordable public transport is therefore important for many interconnected reasons. It’s time Londoners are given a break from ever rising prices. If I become the next Mayor of London I will freeze fares as a first step and hope to go further. I’ll introduce One Zone Weekends and one hour bus tickets to help Londoners get round our city.’
