IRTE Skills Challenge returns

The competition for bus and coach technicians and apprentices the IRTE Skills Challenge will return this year after last year’s competition was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organisers have confirmed that safety for competitors is paramount and that measures will be taken if social distancing needs to be maintained when the competition takes place in the summer. S&B Automotive Academy will adapt the layout of its facility in Bristol if it is still required to do so, to accommodate competitors and judges in a safe environment.

S&B Automotive Academy Training and Education Director, Richard Belton, said that the summer competition can be Covid-secure if it needs to be. He said: “We are currently working in a secure Covid-tested environment so if the competition needs those measures in place, we are ready to comply. As a training organisation we have had to be flexible and we are confident that we can put on a great competition.”

Society Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Moir, said: “We recognise that we must ensure safety for everyone involved if this competition. That is the absolute priority.

“Celebrating the anniversary, we can look back on the extraordinary growth from its launch ten years ago to the hugely influential competition it is today. Now, we will aim to build on that success with new and exciting initiatives that truly reflect the industry values of progression and professional development. Our thanks once again go to our sponsors, partners and supporters for showing their belief in this project.”

One new addition for 2021 will be a technical test for apprentices based on the joint mechanical and electrical skills base, known as mechelec. It reflects the industry’s growing need for multi-skilled technicians who are proficient in both disciplines. Sponsor Teng Tools will be giving away sets of the latest tools as prizes to the highest scoring technicians and apprentices.

“Part of our success has come from our desire to closely mirror the changes the industry is going through and use that to move the sector forward,” added Daniel.
