Government sees hydrogen future

An Environmental Audit Committee meeting has showed the government is predisposed to seeing further use of hydrogen.

Alok Sharma, Secretary of State at Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, told the meeting that the Government aims to publish a hydrogen strategy. Transport, in particular heavy vehicles, may play a part in this.

Also speaking at the meeting was Director General Director General, Energy Transformation and Clean Growth at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Julian Critchlow. He said: “From a transport point of view, we see hydrogen having a big role, especially in the high end where there is a big range or heavy load, so freight vehicles. We have a programme with OLEV, £23 million, looking at funding vehicles and refuelling stations. We have work on hydrogen buses through the DfT ultra-low emission bus scheme. You are aware that the PM promised 4,000 new zero emission buses.”

The move follows pushes by Wrightbus for the roll-out of 3,000 hydrogen-powered buses in the UK.

The government has also announced plans for a hydrogen bus town trial.
