Enviro400 ‘bio-buses’ for Stagecoach

Stagecoach in East Kent has invested £1.1m in six Euro5 ADL Enviro400s that run on 100% biofuel. The vehicles are being used on the Unibus route between the University of Kent and Canterbury Bus Station. The University has contributed to the cost of the new infrastructure installed at the operator’s Herne Bay depot to house the environmentally friendly fuel. They are the first ever ‘bio-buses’ to hit the streets of Canterbury. A dedicated team of specially trained Unibus drivers will be behind their wheels and the buses will also provide free wi-fi for passengers. The launch for the double deckers was held at the University of Kent and was attended by county and city councillors. As well as investing in greener buses, the operator has also recently installed an eco-driving system across its fleet.

MD of Stagecoach in East Kent, Philip Norwell, said, ‘We have a responsibility to look after our environment whilst continuing to provide the public transport that people are increasingly choosing to use to get around east Kent. We work very closely with the University of Kent and the Unibus route has provided sustainable transport for their expanding Canterbury campus. Passenger numbers on the Unibus have grown from 290,000 in 2006 to 1.25m in 2012, saving vast numbers of car journeys in the city. Our investment in these ultramodern vehicles is testament to our commitment to providing quality bus travel in Canterbury to help cut traffic congestion, whilst also continually reducing our own carbon footprint.’
