Bus Users calls on Wales for urgent support

Passenger campaign body, Bus Users has written to the Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates MS, asking for urgent funding for the country’s bus services.

The letter recognised the support already provided by Welsh Government for operators running services throughout the COVID-19 crisis. However, with rules on lockdown now being eased and more people needing to travel, Bus Users claim operators face the challenge of meeting social distancing requirements with greatly reduced services.

Barclay Davies, Director of Bus Users in Wales, warned that without Government support, bus services were at risk: “It’s vital that Welsh communities have access to good bus services again as lockdown starts to ease. Without them, communities face isolation, loneliness and mental health issues, all of which impact local economies, healthcare budgets, education and employment.

“Operators now urgently need the support of Government to ensure services can return to pre-pandemic levels and buses can play their part in the country’s social and economic recovery.”
