Blackpool bus boost planned

Plans to help improve the reliability and travel times of buses around Blackpool are up for discussion. The proposals come after Blackpool Council successfully secured a £1m ‘Better Bus’ grant earlier this year. Views are being sought on one part of the plan to introduce a contra-flow bus lane on Central Drive, between New Bonny Street and Reads Avenue in the town. The lane would allow buses, taxis and cyclists to avoid driving along the current one way system up Albert Road, Coronation Street and Reads Avenue in order to drive south down Central Drive. This is estimated to save three minutes per journey.

Cabinet Member for Streets and Transport, Cllr Fred Jackson, said, ‘The reason that we secured the Better Bus funding from the Government was so that we could enable public transport around town to be much more reliable, so that people would feel more confident about using it regularly. One of the ways that we could do this is to introduce a contra-flow lane on Central Drive, to shave three minutes off the journey of every bus or taxi going south out of the town centre. We want to hear what people’s views are of these plans and how it will affect them, so that we can make an informed choice as to whether or not to press ahead with it.’
