August registration fall, but overall stable

Bus and coach registrations in August this year fell 51.4% to 237 units, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). However, the year-to-date figure remains what SMMT describes as ‘stable’, with a 0.3% drop to 4,836. The rolling year total was up 8.1% at 7,692. SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes, said, ‘Following a particularly strong August last year, this month saw a drop in bus and coach registrations, down 271 units, however year-to-date figures remain stable with a small decrease of 0.3%. Rolling year figures for the market are positive (up 8.1%) as converted buses lead the way with good performance.’
There were 59 purpose built buses registered in August, down 67.9% on the same figures last year. This lead to a rolling year figure of 2,651, a 0% change from the last 12 months. Purpose built coach registrations numbered 39, down 17%, making for a rolling year total of 879, up 11.8%. Converted bus registrations totalled 139, down 45.9%, leading to a rolling year figure of 4,162, a drop of 13.1%.

Registrations by marque (with August 2013’s figures in brackets) were: ADL 27 (79), Volvo Bus 9 (40), Wrightbus 4 (33), Scania 4 (17), Optare 24 (25), VDL 3 (4), Van Hool 11 (18), Mercedes-Benz (excluding Setra) 1 (3), Neoplan 0 (0), Setra 0 (0), Irizar 8 (1), other imports 0 (2), King Long 4 (1), MAN (excluding Neoplan) 0 (0), Iris Bus 3 (8) and Yutong 0 (0).
