VDL Bus & Coach has declared itself the first European bus and coach manufacturer to introduce a 13.5m coach on two axles. The Futura FMD2-135 is the latest variant in the Futura range and features up to ten cubic metres of luggage space together with 63 seats or extra leg room with fewer seats if required. Like the rest of its range, it is intended for both touring and intercity work. Operators have a choice between the Paccar DAF MX-11 240 (330hp) and MX-11 271 (370hp) engines combined with a ZF EcoShift six-speed manual gearbox, a ZF AS Tronic 12-speed semi-automatic gearbox or the ZF EcoLife six-speed fully-automatic gearbox.
The first FMD2-135 Futura has been delivered to Pohjolan Liikenne, one of Finland’s largest operators. CEO, Heikki Alanko, said, ‘The Finnish public transport market is extremely competitive, which means that as an operator we need to find new ways of increasing profitability and attracting passengers. We believe that the new VDL Futura FMD2-135 will help us achieve these goals.’
