Spanish firm for Malta

Spanish operator, Autobuses de Leon, has been named as the preferred bidder to operate Malta’s public transport network. Following the decision by Transport Malta, the island’s transport authority, official negotiations with representatives of the company are set to begin. According to press reports, its offer was €20m cheaper than that made by Island Malta Buses Ltd, which requested an annual subsidy of €42m. Gozo First Travel also made a bid.
The bid followed Arriva’s withdrawal from Malta in January this year, handing over the network to the island’s government. As a result, Malta Public Transport Services Ltd took over €7.9m in total debts.

Autobuses de Leon is affiliated to ALSA in which the UK’s National Express Group has a majority shareholding.
