South Lancs takes on Leigh route

South Lancs Travel is to take on a Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) supported route and will run it commercially. From 8 July the Monday to Saturday daytime 597 service linking Leigh Sports Village with the town centre and infirmary will no longer need public funding. South Lancs will run a bus every half hour. Previously, part of the route’s funding came from Wigan Council, which was aiming to ‘kickstart’ new local transport links to the Sports Village with short term developer funding.

Chair of TfGM Committee’s Bus Network and TfGM Services Committee and Wigan Councillor, Mark Aldred, said, ‘This is a very positive move from South Lancs Travel and I’d like to thank them for taking the initiative to provide this important local service. It’s great to see the 597 now playing a role as part of the commercial bus network. The “kickstart” developer contribution obtained by Wigan Council when planning consent was granted for Leigh Sports Village is clearly doing its job. I wish South Lancs Travel well and hope residents will find their service reliable and convenient.’
