Smart ticketing for South Yorkshire

New smart ticketing services were introduced across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and South Yorkshire zones last week. Two new tickets, TravelMaster 7 and 28 Day tickets are now available as smartcards, offering unlimited travel across the passenger transport network. In addition, 13 smartcard kiosks were introduced at transport interchanges across South Yorkshire where the new tickets can be purchased. Passengers will also be able to obtain them at Travel Information Centres.

The £1.34m initiative is through the partnership of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), YorCard, TravelMaster and bus and tram companies and has been funded by the Better Bus Area Fund (BBAF). The organisations are also working on ways for tickets to be loaded onto smartcards online, via mobile phones and as a ‘pay-as-you-go’ product. More smartcard tickets will be made available over the next year, with the next multi-operator tickets available from this autumn.

SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, David Young, said, ‘SYPTE is committed to making travel on public transport easier and more convenient for customers. This milestone for smart ticketing in South Yorkshire is the next step in revolutionising the way in which our passengers travel. We are excited to continue to progress South Yorkshire’s smartcard project, and carry out our promise to expand the range of tickets that are smart enabled, to modernise and future-proof our public transport network.’
