‘See Something, Say Something’ gets results

West Midlands’ ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign on public transport has resulted in a prolific offender being sent back to prison. A customer on a 28 bus used the service to tell the authorities about two passengers who were openly taking drugs on an Erdington bus. Officers at the Safer Travel Partnership contacted National Express West Midlands to get hold of the CCTV footage from the vehicle. They worked with their colleagues at West Midlands Police to identify the offender, who had recently been released from prison. Michael Rowe, 35, was on licence from prison, with good behaviour conditions that he was supposed to keep to. So working with the probation services, he was recalled back to prison to serve the rest of his sentence.

‘See Something, Say Something’ allows people to pass on details of nuisance behaviour to the Safer Travel Partnership, which operates specifically to tackle and deter crime on the region’s transport network. All passengers need to do is text ‘Bus’ followed by a space to 83010, with a message giving as much information as possible about the nature of the incident.

MD of National Express West Midlands, Peter Coates, said, ‘This is a very good result for everyone using our buses. We know from Transport Focus surveys year on year that the Safer Travel Partnership’s work is reassuring our passengers that travelling on public transport in the West Midlands is safe.’
