Go NE donates to Beamish project

Go-Ahead owned Go North East has contributed towards a £17m project to build a 1950’s ‘Northern General’ bus depot at the Beamish museum where it is a Business Friend. The new bus depot will bear the firm’s original company name, Northern, which is still used today as a brand on some of its buses in the Stanley area. The new depot is to tell the story of transport in the region. It will have a ten berth garage area with working pits, engineering and conservation workshops and will host training for apprentices and school groups.

The Northern General bus depot will be home to a number of post-Second World War trolleybuses and buses that will transport visitors around the museum’s grounds. Beamish will be increasing capacity and expanding its existing transport fleet by around 45% over the next few years. Go North East provides bus services that serve the museum, including the Waggonway 28/28A, 128, Coast and Country 8. Visitors who show they travelled on a Go North East bus get 25% off individual Beamish Unlimited Passes.

MD for Go North East, Kevin Carr, said, ‘This project really stood out for us because it combines two things that are very important to Go North East, supporting local communities and celebrating our proud North East heritage. To be able to get involved in recreating an old Northern bus depot is fantastic and an attraction which I’m sure will be incredibly popular.’
