Free TrawsCymru trial

Free weekend travel on TrawsCymru routes is to be trialled, according to the first Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones. Speaking during the Welsh Labour Conference in Llandudno, Carwyn said, ‘And to strengthen bus services I am today announcing a 12 month pilot of free weekend travel on our long distance TrawsCymru service to encourage more people to travel on the network.’

Responding to the announcement, John Pocket of CPT Cymru, said, ‘I am a little bit amazed and disappointed at this. It was a very brief sentence in a major conference speech. There was no discussion with the industry beforehand and there has been nothing since. We know nothing of how this will work and what they are going to be doing. We don’t know what the financial and commercial implications are. Also, there could be legal implications, as some operators run the TrawsCymru services alongside other routes. Could that be something the Competition and Markets Authority would be interested in?’

‘We are asking the Government to talk to us. We want to know about the financial implications, where is the money going to come from to pay for this? Operators are in the dark and asking questions. They would like to ask the Government questions and we would like them to be answered. I want to mention it to operators as well, I want to let them know this is happening.’
