False impressions

Last week’s Optare launch at Covent Garden was quite an event. With only nine months development time and so many double deck false dawns in the past, I had feared that we might be witnessing something less impressive than turned out to be the case, but a TfL specification double deck weighing a shade under ten tonnes is a truly remarkable achievement by anybody’s standards.

Optare have produced a video of the launch which you can link to via this site, a great many of you already have. As I prefer to avoid the cameras and gather the news rather than appearing in it, I’m rather disturbed to find that I feature briefly in it. With my rucksack on my back, camera round my neck and notebook in hand I can’t help feeling that I look a bit of an anorak as I quiz Optare Chairman, John Fickling, on the MetroDecker’s finer points.

It just goes to show the value of keeping an open mind and forming your opinions on the basis of the evidence.
