Coventry City Council suspends bus lanes

An initial eight bus lanes in Coventry have been suspended for nine months under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order which came into force on January 16 2017.  The results of this phase will be reviewed after six months when Council officers will report back to Council so further decisions can be made.

Leader of the Council, Cllr George Duggins, said: ‘As a bus user myself I’m confident that we will see improvements for all road users in the locations where we remove bus lanes. I’d also like to thank the bus companies for agreeing to give this trial a go.’

Councillor Jayne Innes, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: ‘We know motorists are frustrated when they sit in a queue with an empty lane next to them so we are hoping this trial will show improvements to traffic flow. Of course we want buses to run to time too so we will monitor carefully over the next six months.’

Whilst the majority of the bus lanes suspended are short lengths in the vicinity of road junctions, the full length of  Binley Road outbound is included. This stretch was part of a significant route upgrading completed in 2005 which also included new street furniture and new vehicles from Travel Coventry (now National Express Coventry).

Works to install yellow ‘bus lane suspended’ signs and remove existing markings on the suspended lanes is intended to be completed by the end of February.
