Arriva acquires Abellio’s Czech operations

Arriva has strengthened its position as the largest international passenger transport operator in central and eastern Europe following the acquisition of Abellio’s operations in the Czech Republic for an undisclosed sum. The deal sees the company acquire intercity and city bus services operator, Probo Bus, and PT Real, an asset management and engineering company. The two concerns will now operate as part of Arriva, Deutsche Bahn’s division for passenger transport operations outside of Germany. Employing approximately 200 people, the new business runs over 110 vehicles split between its core business of inter urban services in central Bohemia and the Plzensky region, as well as integrated intercity and urban transport in Prague, Beroun and Horovice. Annual revenues for 2012 were £7.78m/CZK257m. Arriva has been active in the Czech Republic since 2006. The acquisition sees it expand its operations in the country to more than 2,000 buses, four trains and some 3,100 employees.

MD – mainland Europe and deputy CEO, Mike Cooper, said, ‘This latest acquisition further strengthens our position in the Czech Republic’s intercity and urban bus markets and complements our portfolio in central and eastern Europe. Probo Bus and PT Real have strong reputations and, alongside our existing businesses in the Czech Republic, are highly regarded for their operational excellence. We know the market well and our aim is to provide the best possible service to customers and continue our constructive relations with the Czech transport and tendering authorities. We look forward to welcoming our new employees to the Arriva group and taking the business forward.’
